A busy dashboard can make marketing look productive without showing whether it helps the business. Separate activity from progress.

Define each stage

A click is a visit from an interaction. A lead is a recorded inquiry under your definition. A qualified lead matches relevant business criteria. A customer has reached the point your operation recognizes as a sale.

Keep those definitions consistent across reports. Counting every form submission as a qualified opportunity can conceal spam, duplicates, and unsuitable inquiries.

Calculate comparable measures

Cost per lead divides relevant spend by recorded leads. Cost per customer uses acquired customers instead. Specify whether management fees and other costs are included.

Revenue is not profit. A campaign that brings sales may still need better economics after fulfillment costs.

Close the reporting loop

Give staff a simple way to record inquiry outcomes. Review how many became conversations, proposals, and customers.

Attribution has limits: people use multiple devices and channels, and some activity is not observable. Treat reports as decision tools rather than perfect histories.

Choose a few measures tied to your business goal. Better definitions often improve decisions more than adding another dashboard chart.
