Hosting, maintenance, and security often appear together in a website plan. They describe related responsibilities, but their scope should be explained separately.

Hosting provides the environment

Hosting supplies the infrastructure where the website runs. Plans differ in resources, administration, backups, and support. Ask who handles the domain, DNS, email, and application hosting; those may be separate services.

Maintenance keeps the application workable

Maintenance can include software updates, compatibility checks, backups, and small operational corrections. Content changes, new features, and redesign work may require a separate scope.

Ask how updates are handled when a change could affect forms, checkout, or another important function. “Automatic updates enabled” does not explain the full maintenance process.

Security is an ongoing practice

Useful measures may include access controls, software patching, monitoring, and recovery planning. No plan can honestly promise that a website will never experience an incident.

Request specifics: what is monitored, how often backups run, how long copies are retained, and who responds when a problem is reported.

Compare providers using those responsibilities rather than the plan name alone. A clear agreement helps both sides understand what is included, what requires approval, and how to get help when the website needs attention.
